### What automatic failover actually does

A business-grade gateway holds two paths to the internet: your primary circuit, and a backup, usually **5G**. It monitors the primary continuously and moves traffic across when that path degrades or fails.

Done properly, the switch takes seconds. Cloud applications reconnect, calls in progress may drop, and the working day continues. Done badly, someone has to notice the outage, find the right cupboard and reboot something, which is the situation you were trying to escape.

The distinction that matters is **automatic** versus a spare router in a drawer. A backup nobody has tested is not a backup.

### Why 5G is now the sensible second path

The classic advice was two fibre circuits from two providers. That is still the strongest option, but it has a weakness people forget: two circuits can share the same physical duct into the building, so one contractor with a digger takes out both.

5G avoids that by being a genuinely different medium. It is quick to provision, needs no civil works, and now delivers throughput adequate for a full office rather than just email. With a 5G failover path in place, 99.9% uptime is a realistic target rather than a marketing number.

Ireland is targeting high-speed access to 95% of premises by the end of 2026. For rural offices in the remaining gap, 5G is often not the backup at all. It is the primary.

### The number that matters more than speed

Most businesses buy connectivity on advertised speed. When something breaks, the number they wish they had bought on is the **repair time**.

Consumer and small-business broadband typically carries a best-efforts promise. A business circuit should come with a service level attached to fixing it, and a guaranteed **four-hour on-site fix** is the benchmark worth asking for.

Compare honestly: a fast connection with a three-day repair window is worse for your business than a slower one with a four-hour commitment, because the second scenario is survivable and the first is not.

### What to check before you sign

- **What is the target fix time, and is it contractual?** "We aim to" is not a service level.
- **Does the backup path use different physical infrastructure?** If both circuits enter through the same duct, you have redundancy on paper only.
- **How does failover behave for voice?** If your phones are cloud-based, this decides whether calls survive the switch.
- **Is the failover tested?** It should be exercised deliberately, on a schedule, not discovered during an outage.

### Where SD-WAN comes in

For a single site, a gateway with 5G failover is usually the right answer and the right cost.

Once you have several sites, SD-WAN becomes worth the conversation. It aggregates fibre and 4G/5G links, steers traffic by application rather than by simple up-or-down state, and applies policy consistently across every location. Voice can take the most stable path while bulk file transfer takes the cheapest.

It is the sophisticated end of the same idea rather than a different one. Most businesses do not need it until the second or third site.

### Failover is not only about the line

A resilient connection still fails if the single gateway it runs through dies, or if the cabinet it lives in loses power.
